Student Grade Level Retainment (Act 66)

Student Grade Level Retainment (Act 66)

July 6, 2021

Dear Octorara Families:

I hope you had a relaxing and enjoyable July 4th holiday. The purpose of my email is to inform you about an important change to Pennsylvania’s School Code.

Act 66, signed by Governor Wolf last week, permits parents or guardians of students enrolled in Octorara’s schools during the 2020-21 school year to retain their student in the grade in which they were enrolled for an additional school year due to COVID-19 learning disruptions.  Also, students whose special education services would have ended due to reaching the age of 21 may have the option to extend those services for the 2021-22 school year.

Please note that there is a hard deadline of July 15, 2021 in the law for families to exercise these options. The Pennsylvania Department of Education has also developed an application form to facilitate this process.  In order to exercise either option, the parent or guardian must complete PDE’s application. More information about this opportunity, along with the application, can be found by clicking on the link below.

If you would like to discuss your child’s individual circumstances, I encourage you to contact your child’s school principal. Thank you for your continued support of the Octorara Area School District.

Sincerely,

Michele M. Orner, Ed.D.

Superintendent of Schools
