A Special Note from the Principal

    August 26, 2019

    Dear Parents and Students,

Welcome to the start of the 2019-2020 school year.  Octorara Elementary School continues to offer a rich learning environment for all of our third and fourth graders, and I am pleased to serve as principal in such a wonderful community and school district.  I am also thankful to have such a highly qualified staff of teachers and instructional assistants who continue to integrate new and exciting instructional techniques into their everyday teaching to ensure a great learning experience for your children.

As parents/guardians, you are a crucial part of your child’s educational team.  I encourage you to be involved- whether by volunteering in your child’s classroom, working with the PTO, or just by staying in touch with your child’s teachers-your involvement will have a significant impact on your child’s academic success.  I also want to remind you how important it is for your child to be in school each day.  School attendance is not only the law, but it also impacts learning.  Please remember that gaps in sequence of instruction are difficult to overcome.  If it is necessary for your son/daughter to be absent due to illness, the law requires a note from you or preferably a physician.

The following is a special word to the parents of our new 3rd graders.  The Octorara Elementary School staff would like to welcome you as you transition with your child to the elementary building.  The next two years will provide your child with different adventures, challenges, and opportunities.  We look forward to working together with you in order to provide the best education possible for your child.

I would also like to communicate a few items pertaining to school safety.  Parents and guardians who wish to volunteer at school or chaperone on field trips must complete volunteer paperwork and obtain and present criminal record and child abuse clearances to school personnel prior to volunteering (some situations) or chaperoning.  Furthermore, any school visitor who requests to access the school past the office will be required to have his or her valid driver’s license scanned into our Electronic Visitor Management System.  This system will log the visit and will check the visitor’s name against national sex offender databases before a visitor’s pass will be issued. You can find more information regarding clearances and how to obtain them as well as more information on our Electronic Visitor Management System by visiting our District’s website at www.octorara.k12.pa.us and selecting “Safety Information” under the “Our District” tab and “Volunteers” under the “Community” tab.  Additionally, parents/guardians picking their child up from school during the day or at dismissal will be required to show school staff a valid driver’s license or government issued ID.

In previous years, optional student accident insurance brochures were sent home on the first day of school; however, this year these brochures are available online on the District’s website by selecting the “Resources” link under the “For Parents” tab. If interested, download the brochure, fill out the application and mail it to the address provided on the application. Do not have your child bring it into school. The application along with your payment must be mailed.  Additional brochures will be available in the main office.

To stay up to date with things happening here at OES, I encourage you to check the OES page on the district website regularly:  www.octorara.k12.pa.us.  There, you will find important information about our school and upcoming events.  On occasion, I will send a voice and/or email message to your phone and/or email address containing important announcements.  Please be sure to complete and turn in your child’s updated emergency form so that we have your correct information.

Before closing, there are a few dates that you should be aware of:

    • OES Back to School Night – September 4th (6:30 PM – 7:30 PM)
    • OES Picture Day – September 17th
