Summer Literacy Camp!
The Octorara Summer Literacy and Math Program is a half day, five-week program, which strives to support developing readers, keep school-aged children reading, and prevent summer learning loss by providing Incoming Kindergarten through sixth grade students with an hour and a half of literacy (listening, speaking, reading and writing) instruction and 45 minutes of math instruction daily. Students also participate in enrichment activities that include Science, Writing, Computers, Arts and Crafts and Playground.
Although the focus of the program is academics, the instruction is presented in a camp-like atmosphere with lots of fun. The younger children are assigned to counselors and there are theme days each week such as red, white and blue day and crazy sock day during which the children can win prizes.
The literacy groups are small, with only 4-6 students per teacher. This provides an excellent opportunity for individual, one on one instruction during which a child’s specific reading needs can be met.
