OCTORARA AREA JR. HIGH SCHOOL
2012 SUMMER READING REQUIREMENT

Dear Parents/Guardians:

The Octorara Area School District's Summer Reading Program strives to reinforce effective reading comprehension strategies, foster an appreciation for reading, and expose students to diverse readings designed to appeal to the wide range of interests and skill levels of our population.  Above all, we want to develop a love of reading among all of our students.  It is only through reading for pleasure that our students will continue to improve and develop the skills of reading comprehension, critical thinking, and analysis that will enable them to be life-long learners.

Each student who has completed grades 7 and 8 must complete three appropriate summer reading assignments and graphic organizers for the grade he/she has just completed.  Each grade appropriate summer reading assignment will enable students to demonstrate their understanding of three (3) self-selected books from grade level lists.

For students finishing grade 7, the summer reading requirement will count for 5% of the first marking period Communication Arts grade.  All assignments should be turned in to your child's CA teacher no later than Friday, September 14, 2012.

For students finishing grade 8, students will turn their summer reading assignments in to their homeroom teacher to become part of their graduation portfolio and satisfy a graduation requirement.  Additionally, students will be asked to complete an in-class essay on one of the books they have read independently.

Please note that any student finishing grade 8 who is taking Honors English is exempt from this assignment because they are required to complete an alternate summer assignment as a pre-requisite for those courses.

Additional copies of grade level reading lists and graphic organizers can be found in the links below, in your child's school office, or in your local library.  Students may read a book(s) that are not on the list as long as they are grade/age appropriate.

Any questions or concerns can be directed to your child's CA teacher, or to Elena Wilson, Director of Teaching and Learning K-12 at ewilson@octorara.org; 610-593-8254.

Sincerely,
The Octorara Area School District Reading Department
