The Octorara Area School District takes a balanced literacy approach to English Language Arts instruction in grades K-5. A balanced literacy program uses both whole language and phonics.The components of a balanced literacy approach include: the read aloud, guided reading, shared reading, interactive writing, shared writing, Reading Workshop, Writing Workshop and phonology (phonics) or word study.
